The Bishop William G. Connare Award recognizes diocesan stewardship and development directors for long and distinguished service. It is presented in memory of Bishop Connare, who provided 15 years of leadership to ICSC as its Episcopal Moderator.
Anthony T. Gwiazdowski
Anthony T. Gwiazdowski is the director of stewardship and development and chief development officer for the Diocese of Providence, Rhode Island, where he directs the Catholic Charity Fund, the second oldest diocesan annual appeal in the Untied States, the diocesan stewardship program, the Catholic Foundation of Rhode Island and the Anchor of Hope Scholarship program. He has held this position on the diocesan staff since 1996. With 33 years of development experience, Mr. Gwiazdowski has served as a district executive for the Narragansett Council, Boy Scouts of America, assistant director of alumni/development for Providence College, director of development/alumni affairs for Johnson & Wales University in Providence, and as the chief development officer for Newbury College, Brookline, Massachusetts. Mr. Gwiazdowski has also served as an executive director for Community Counselling Service, Inc. and has directed major capital campaigns in New York, Maine and Rhode Island. He has published several articles including one in the ICSC Journal, Resource: Strategic Planning for Diocesan Stewardship and Development Offices.
Mr. Gwiazdowski is a former board member of the Rhode Island chapter of NSFRE (National Society of Fund-Raising Executives, now AFP) and District 1 (New England) of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), and the International Catholic Stewardship Council board of directors. Mr. Gwiazdowski was the conference program chair for the 2004 ICSC conference, a faculty member of the ICSC Winter and Summer Institute, and the Institute Coordinator for the ICSC Institute for Professional Development. He is a frequent speaker at ICSC international conferences. Mr. Gwiazdowski holds a bachelor’s and master of arts degrees from Providence College and is the proud father of two adult children who both work in the development profession.
