A wise person once said, “Pray that your marriage will be a blazing fire around which others will come to warm themselves.” This is a memorable image for the marriage of two people who wish to make stewardship a sacramental way of life for themselves and their children.
June remains one of the most popular months to be married, and a Christian marriage is always something to be celebrated.
Marriage is a fundamental institution in the life of a Christian steward. If you are married, you know your stewardship commitment is not a solitary one, but a partnership. Stewardship times two has an exponential effect in the life of our Catholic community.
In each of the sacraments we see a sign of Christ’s redemptive presence in the world. In Christian marriage we acknowledge our role as stewards and co-creators with God in this world. Out of love God created us and all that exists. God is faithful no matter what. Whether we are true to the covenant with our spouse or with God, God is forever faithful.
Blessed John Paul II remarked that marriage -... is an act of will that signifies and involves a mutual gift, which unites the spouses and binds them to their eventual souls, with whom they make up a sole family - a domestic church.
This mutual gift, which spouses give to one another, they also give to the entire community of faith and beyond. Their love for each other is a sacramental sign and witness of God’s faithful love for us all.
Marriage requires compromise, personal sacrifice, mutual trust and ongoingcommunication. All of those are necessary to make Christian stewardship a centerpiece in a shared life. Through Christian marriage, children are provided the witness of stewardship.
Even for those who have never been married, the marriage of our parents has profoundly influenced our concept of sacrifice and giving.
So, whether it’s your anniversary or not, take time in June to celebrate marriageand remember what a profound impact the marriage of Christian stewards has on the world.
