The 2010 winner of the Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy Award is Queen of Peace Catholic Community in Gainesville, Florida, a parish so attuned to stewardship that its mission statement is the definition of stewardship from the United States bishops’ pastoral letter on stewardship.
Queen of Peace is a relatively new parish, having been around for less than 25 years. In the fall of 2002, the parish entered a dynamic phase of its spiritual journey by becoming a “total stewardship parish.” This has included such notable aspects as offering 10% of income to support other charities and to expand its ministries, to have an active stewardship council, to engage in regular and vigorous covenant renewals, to offer extensive hospitality and fellowship, to launch a ministry leader forum, and to make parishioners more aware of the spirituality of stewardship
Queen of Peace has been a leader in successful communications with its parishioners and community, including its Web site, blog, a monthly letter (via email or regular mail) to the parishioners and traditional printed materials. It has been a frequent winner of the ICSC Parish Stewardship video award, and the parish has recently established a new ‘information’ ministry called the Connectors. Stewardship is regularly included as part of the faith formation curriculum and the parish hosts a regular stewardship day of reflection retreat.
Even with many past successes, Queen of Peace continues to search for and implement new ways to spread the message of stewardship.
