Much as musicians or sports figures cultivate their gifts by learning how to use them better and practicing more, so do all people do that with any gift God has given them. Catholics should learn not only more about stewardship and what it is, but also how to better use the gifts God has given them. Bishop Robert Morneau of Green Bay developed the idea of the 12 Gardens of Stewardship seeking to help people understand that they are to become better stewards in all areas of their lives (eg, their bodies, technology, civic life). Parishes would do well to help educate their parishioners on ways to better use those gifts as God call them to. Examples might be through bulletin inserts that educate about stewardship, adult and youth faith formation that include stewardship components, voter forums, planned giving seminars, parenting workshops – there are many possibilities of how parishes can help parishioners understand how to use their gifts more fully as God intended. ICSC has resources to make it easy for parishes to do this.
