We do well to remember that the Lord has given us all we have and are and will be as temporary caretakers during our lifetime of those gifts. During our lifetime, our Lord is asking us only to return a portion of those gifts – and we do it most appropriately by giving in a planned, proportionate, sacrificial, and thankful way to our Church, the Lord’s instrument here on earth. We do this through giving both financially and volunteering. This is what most people initially think of when they hear the word ‘stewardship.’ Many methods have been developed to help Catholics deal with those obstacles that human nature puts in our way to the generosity that God is calling us to. Examples include regularly asking for an intentional written commitment. Periodic reminders of our commitment. And encouragement from our church to help us keep that commitment amidst the distractions of every day life. The International Catholic Stewardship Council has many resources to share with members to help them to increase parishioner generosity.
